KELECHI Iheanacho is already looking beyond the group stage of the Cameroon 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after helping the Super Eagles beat Egypt on Tuesday.
The Leicester City forward scored the only goal of the 1-0 win in Garoua with a thunderous hit and linked up superbly with his former Golden Eaglets FIFA U-17 World Cup strike partner Taiwo Awoniyi.
Iheanacho was named the man of the match after the encounter and expressed pleasure in his contribution to the big win.
“I am happy to represent my country,” he said after receiving his prize.
He then proclaimed his wish for the team.
“I am happy to score and hopefully, this team can work together and achieve our aims, get to the final, and win the tournament.”
The former Manchester City forward said the Super Eagles’ hard work paid off against the Pharaohs, who lost an AFCON group match for the first time since 2004.
“We prepared for this game and the competition, we have been working hard since we resumed in Abuja,” he explained.
“Egypt are a strong team and they have great players but we were not scared of them. We have confidence and we have a good team.”
Iheanacho will hope to increase his goals tally on Saturday when the Super Eagles face Sudan in their second Group D fixture.
