CHELSEA manager Thomas Tuchel has tested positive for Covid-19 and will not be with the team for a few days.
The club announced Tuchel’s positive result on Saturday, just ahead of their FA Cup fourth round fixture against lower league side Plymouth.
“Thomas Tuchel has tested positive for Covid-19,” Chelsea announced on their official website on Saturday.”The Chelsea head coach will now follow necessary self-isolation protocols and hopes to join up with the team in Abu Dhabi later next week.”
One of Tuchel’s assistants Arno Michels will be in charge of the side against Plymouth in the absence of the German.
The Chelsea team is scheduled to fly out to the United Arab Emirates for the FIFA Club World Cup shortly after Saturday afternoon’s FA Cup clash with Plymouth, apparently without Tuchel on board.
European champions Chelsea will begin their campaign at the Club World Cup in the semi-finals on Wednesday against yet-to-be-determined opponents.
Tuchel is set to miss that game but he could be available for the third-place match or final next Saturday.
Chelsea are in the Club World Cup along with other continental champions including Asian Champions League holders Al Hilal of Saudi who recently signed Nigeria international Odion Ighalo, African champions Al Ahly and South America’s Palmeiras.
