U-17 WWC: Ruthless Flamingos spank DR Congo in Kinshasa

NIGERIA’s Flamingos thrashed their hosts DR Congo 3-0 in their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup second round, first leg qualifying encounter in Kinshasa on Sunday.

The dominant three-time World Cup quarter-finalists began the game brightly and took the lead in the 36th minute after coming close several times.

Defender Miracle Usani set up Blessing Emmanuel to score the Flamingos’ first goal and it stayed at 1-0 until half-time.

As the Nigerian girls searched for more goals, coach Bankole Olowookere brought on Raheemot Adebayo and Anastasia Atume, pulling out Aminat Bello and Kafayat Bashiru.

The changes paid off as Atume was fouled near the Congolese goal area, and Tumininu Adeshina converted from the spot for Nigeria’s second.

Atume then missed a sitter two minutes later, but with 14 minutes to go, Taiwo Ajakaye took on the Congolese defence before finishing smoothly for Nigeria’s third goal. The Congolese finished the tie with only 10 players after Nwanji was shown the red card 20 minutes to full time.

Both teams clash again on Saturday, 19 March at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with winners on aggregate to face Egypt.
