BLACK Stars coaches Otto Addo and Chris Hughton are upbeat about their side’s chances as they prepare to face the Super Eagles in the Qatar 2022 World Cup playoffs.
Neighbours and fierce rivals Ghana and Nigeria meet in Kumasi on Friday and in Abuja on Tuesday next week in a battle for one of Africa’s five tickets to the World Cup.
Interim head coach Addo and technical advisor Hughton spoke in video messages on Monday, assuring Ghanaians that the team will do everything in their power to overcome Nigeria.
“We’re only a few days away from playing a crucial match against our rivals Nigeria. We all expect Ghana to qualify for the FIFA World Cup (Qatar 2022) but that won’t be easy as we need to do our best to make it to this tournament,” Addo, who is a former Ghana international and current assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund, said.
“The players, the technical team, and the Ghana Football Association are committed to this task. We really want to make ourselves and the nation proud by qualifying for this upcoming World Cup.
“Matches between Ghana and Nigeria are always difficult but we believe in our players, we believe in our strategies, and we believe in the unflinching support of all Ghanaians as we go into these two matches.
“We are Ghana and we have what it takes to come out victorious.”
Former Brighton and Newcastle manager Hughton emphasised that the Black Stars have what it takes to edge out the Super Eagles.
“It is our aim to qualify for the world cup, and we have a duty to make that dream a reality,” the former Irish international said.
“We can guarantee everyone is working towards qualifying for the World Cup.
“We are Ghana and we are ready”.
Black Stars’ squad for the tie has not been officially named but the players will begin preparations on Monday evening with their first training in Accra.
They will travel to Kumasi on Tuesday where they are expected to have two training sessions ahead of Friday night’s first leg.
