LIRS says it does not intend to extend it’s deadline for tax return filing

THE Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has  warned that there are no plans to extend the mandatory March 31 deadline for filing individual yearly tax reports.

Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman, made the announcement at the LIRS headquarters in Ikeja. He warned all individual taxpayers, including self-employed individuals and employees covered by the PAYE Scheme, to use the remaining days in March to complete their annual tax returns, or face penalties and other penalties, including prosecution.

According to him, Section 41 of the Personal Income Tax Act mandates the filing of annual tax returns (PITA).

The law according to him, requires all taxable persons to file a return of aggregate income from all sources for the previous year with the state tax office where they reside within 90 days of the year’s start.

In the last three months, he added, LIRS has engaged taxpayers through various media to remind them of their statutory obligations under PITA Cap P8 2011. (as amended).

Subair cautioned that if taxpayers failed to meet the deadline, the agency would use the whole force of the law to prosecute them.

He emphasized that the state’s tax returns could only be filed through the LIRS eTax site – https://etax.lirs.net.

According to the LIRS director, all taxable persons in the state must register on the eTax portal, which was created specifically for the convenience of taxpayers.
