Iwobi shines as Everton beat Man United to ease relegation fears

ALEX Iwobi was one of the standout players on Saturday as Everton defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park.

The Nigeria international started and played the full game, excelling in attack and putting in an impressive defensive shift.

The Super Eagles star was rewarded for his immense effort as Everton secured a valuable victory against a lacklustre United side in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Anthony Gordon scored with a deflected strike in the 27th minute after Everton withstood a spell of early United pressure.

Gordon’s shot from the edge of the Manchester United box took a big deflection off the unlucky Harry Maguire and wrong-footed goalkeeper David De Gea.

It was a huge relief for manager Frank Lampard after his side were pulled into the relegation battle following a 3-2 defeat at Burnley in midweek.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had made two key early saves from Marcus Rashford and a vital late block from Cristiano Ronaldo before their goal.

However, after going behind, United failed to mount any sustained effort to get back in the game, with all their big name attackers — Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho — failing to trouble the resolute Everton defence.

While the result took Everton four points clear of the relegation zone, it all but ended United’s already faint hopes of a top four finish.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are seventh in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and fifth-placed Arsenal who both have games in hand.
