Mixed fortunes for Eagles stars as Osimhen makes history, Aribo, Lookman score

THERE were goals for three Super Eagles stars on Sunday in different European leagues and with different outcomes.

In Italy, Victor Osimhen continued his rich vein of scoring form for Napoli in their Serie A clash at home to Fiorentina, but his heroics could not save his side from defeat.

The Nigeria striker contributed a goal and assist as Napoli slipped up in the title race with a 3-2 defeat to Fiorentina at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Osimhen set Dries Mertens up with a brilliant assist for Napoli’s equaliser after Nico Gonzalez had given the visitors a surprise lead.

Fiorentina then added two more goals to go 3-1 up before Osimhen reduced the deficit with a smooth chest control and right-footed volley in the 84th minute.

Osimhen has now scored 12 Serie A goals in 21 appearances, becoming the first Nigerian ever to score that many goals in an Italian top flight season, beating Obafemi Martins’ previous mark of 11.

Osimhen is also the first Nigerian to net double figures in two consecutive Serie A seasons.

Still, Napoli dropped to third in the table, one point behind leaders AC Milan.

Also in Italy, Tyrone Ebuehi started for Venezia and David Okereke was a second-half substitute for the same side as they lost 2-1 at home to Udinese. Another Nigerian, Isaac Success, was brought on in the second half for Udinese.

In Scotland, Joe Aribo scored Rangers’ fourth goal in their 4-0 Scottish Premiership win at St. Mirren as the champions reduced the gap to leaders Celtic to six points.

Leon Balogun was an unused substitute for Rangers, while Calvin Bassey was not in the squad.

In England, Ademola Lookman was on target as Leicester City defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, with Kelechi Iheanacho making a late substitute appearance.
