Super Eagles to face Mexico in World Cup friendly in May

THE Super Eagles have been lined up as one of Mexico’s friendly opponents in the summer.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced late on Tuesday night that the three-time African champions will face the El Tri on 28 May in the United States of America.

“Official: Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face the El Tri of Mexico in an international friendly game on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas,” the NFF wrote on social media.

The game between the familiar foes — the two have played each other in several friendly games in recent years — is the first in a series of friendlies Mexico have lined up in preparation for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which Nigeria failed to qualify for.

Five days after playing Nigeria, Mexico will face Uruguay in another friendly on 2 June in Glendale, Arizona, before battling Ecuador in Chicago, Illinois on 5 June.

The Mexicans will also be up against Paraguay in Atlanta, Georgia on 31 August as part of their World Cup build-up.

Nigeria and Mexico have met five times since 1995, with four of the encounters ending in draws. Their last meeting however was won by Mexico 4-0 in the United States last July, when Nigeria presented a largely home-based squad.

Mexico are in Group C of the Qatar 2022 World Cup along with Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Poland.
