Bassey wins Rangers award as Aribo, Balogun miss out

CALVIN Bassey was one of the major winners on Sunday night at the 2021/2022 Rangers Player Awards.

The Super Eagles defender was named the Men’s Young Player of the Year after an impressive campaign.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international, who joined Rangers in 2020 from Leicester City U-23s, has made 44 appearances for the Scottish champions in all competitions this season, contributing four assists.

Bassey has become a favourite with Rangers fans as he has excelled both at centre-back and left-back.

He earned his first Nigeria call-up on the back of his impressive performances for Rangers and featured for the Super Eagles in their World Cup playoffs against Ghana in March.

Bassey’s compatriots at Rangers, Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun, missed out on the awards however.

In the Men’s Player of the Year category that both were eligible for, the prize went to Colombia striker Alfredo Morelos, who is the club’s top scorer.

The two were also beaten to the Men’s Players’ Player of the Year award by captain James Tavernier, while John Lundstram bagged the Goal of the Year prize.

Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership behind bitter rivals Celtic, but they have advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League where they will face RB Leipzig.
