LIVERPOOL stayed close to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Everton at Anfield on Sunday.
After a tight first half of very few chances, two second-half goals gave Liverpool victory that plunged Merseyside rivals Everton deeper into relegation trouble.
Andrew Robertson’s header broke Everton’s resistance in the 62nd minute and substitute Divock Origi sealed the crucial points with five minutes left.
The result means Liverpool stay one point behind league leaders Manchester City.
Everton’s loss, along with Burnley’s win over Wolves earlier on Sunday, means the Blues drop into the bottom three.
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi was one of Everton’s best players in the match with his hard running and graft, but it was all in vain.
Frank Lampard’s side are two points behind Burnley and have a game in hand but face a big challenge to maintain their top-flight status, with games against Chelsea and Leicester City coming up next.
Liverpool have now won 14 Premier League games at home this season, drawing the other three.
In stark contrast, Everton have lost 12 times away from home in the Premier League this season, winning just one and drawing three.
With five games left each, Liverpool play before Manchester City next Saturday, travelling to Newcastle for the early kick-off before Pep Guardiola’s side face Leeds at Elland Road in the evening.
