Flamingos off to Ethiopia on Wednesday for U-17 WWC final battle

THE Flamingos squad to Ethiopia for the final round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers will leave for Addis Ababa tomorrow, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.

Head coach of the Nigerian team Bankole Olowookere has selected 22 players for Friday’s encounter, which is the first leg of the tie.

After beating both Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt home and away, the Flamingos have a final hurdle in a team that surprisingly eliminated South Africa’s Bantwana in the last round, after a shock 3-0 win in Johannesburg.

The Nigerian girls have been ruthless in this qualifying series, scoring 14 goals and conceding none in their four matches so far. They defeated DR Congo 8-0 on aggregate and handed Egypt a 6-0 aggregate beatdown in the third round.

Friday’s match will be held at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in Addis Ababa starting from 4pm Ethiopian time (2pm Nigerian time), with Namibian match officials in charge.

The decisive second leg is scheduled for the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, 4 June.
