Flying Eagles must win WAFU trophy, AFCON ticket not enough — Bosso

FLYING Eagles head coach Ladan Bosso has declared that only the WAFU B U-20 Championship trophy will be good enough for his team.

The Nigerians face neighbours Benin Republic in the regional tournament’s final in Niamey, Niger Republic tomorrow.

Although Nigeria and Benin Republic have both qualified for the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt by reaching the WAFU final, Bosso is gunning for the big prize.

“We are happy to have the AFCON ticket under our belts now, but we want more,” Bosso said.

Veteran Bosso is in his third spell as Flying Eagles head coach and was in charge in 2020 when the team failed to reach the WAFU final and missed out on AFCON. He is determined to make amends this time.

“The Cup is now within reach and we will go all out for it,” he noted. “We want to be WAFU B champions. That will give us tremendous boost going into the African championship next year.”

Like the Flying Eagles, Benin Republic also topped their WAFU B group, finishing above Cote d’Ivoire.

The Young Squirrels then defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 in the first semi-final on Tuesday.

Seven-time African champions Nigeria also defeated Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 after extra-time in the second semi-final at the Stade General Seyni Kountché on Tuesday to set up final.
