Oborududu, other Nigerian wrestlers off to Morocco for African Championships

TOKYO 2020 silver medallist Blessing Oborududu will lead Team Nigeria to the African Wrestling Championships in El Jadida, Morocco, which began on Tuesday and will end on Sunday.

Nigeria’s contingent is made up of 13 wrestlers (10 women and three men), two coaches Purity Akuh and Victor Kodei, referee Usman Yusif, as well as the Assistant Secretary General of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Catherine Orjiako.

They are due to leave the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos tonight via a Turkish Airline flight and arrive at the host nation in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Oborududu (68kg), who is gunning for an 11th consecutive African title, is unbeaten on the continent since 2010.

The Commonwealth champion will be joined in the women’s wrestling event by former world No.1 and five-time time African champion Odunayo Adekuoroye, who is stepping up to 59kg.

African champions Hannah Reuben (76kg), Sunmisola Balogun (65kg) and Esther Kolawole (57kg), who claimed a historic bronze medal at last year’s U-23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, are also on the trip, joined by national champions Christiana Ogunsanya (50kg), Mercy Adekuoroye (53kg), Ebi Biogos (72kg), Jumoke Adekoye (55kg) and Patience Opuene (62kg).

In the men’s freestyle events, Team Nigeria will be represented by reigning African champion Ogbonna John (74kg), who is gunning for a fifth consecutive continental title, Commonwealth silver medallist Ebikewenimo Welson (57kg) and Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ekerekeme Agiomor, a 2018 African champion.

Team Nigeria are favourites to retain the women’s wrestling team title they have won multiple times in recent years, with Tunisia expected to provide stiff competition.

The Nigerian women’s team will compete on Saturday, with the men grappling on Sunday, the final day of the competition.
