Aribo, Bassey, Balogun win Scottish Cup with Rangers after Europa heartbreak

SUPER Eagles stars Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun were all in action today as Rangers defeated Hearts 2-0 to lift the Scottish Cup.

The victory came just three days after the Glasgow giants lost the UEFA Europa League final on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, Spain.

All three Nigeria internationals started for Rangers at Hampden Park in Glasgow, helping their club to win in extra-time.

Despite Rangers’ dominance — they had 58 percent of the possession and seven shots on target to Hearts’ zero — regulation time ended 0-0 and they faced the prospect of another penalty shootout heartbreak.

Rangers however found the breakthrough in extra-time, with Ryan Jack and Scott Wright scoring in the 94th and 97th minutes.

While Bassey, who was sensational in Wednesday night’s Europa League defeat, and Balogun played the whole game, Aribo was taken off for Zambia striker Fashion Sakala in the second half of extra-time.

Today’s victory gave Rangers their 34th Scottish Cup trophy and their first in the competition since the 2008/2009 season.
