Osimhen wins Serie A’s Best Young Player award

NAPOLI striker Victor Osimhen has been named the Best Young Player for the 2021/2022 season in Serie A.

The Super Eagles star was announced as the winner of the prestigious prize yesterday, beating the likes of Juventus striker Dusan Vlaovic and others.

The award is for the best player in the Italian top flight aged 23 and under.

Osimhen, who turned 23 in December, missed two months of the campaign while recovering from facial fractures and surgery, but still emerged as Napoli’s top scorer.

He has scored 14 goals and made five assists in 26 Serie A appearances this season, firing Napoli to third place and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, banishing the ghosts of last term’s disappointing fifth-place finish.

Osimhen, who is in his second season at Napoli after joining from Lille for around €80m in September 2020, has been linked with a big move to England but he has insisted that he is staying in Italy.

Apart from Osimhen, other end-of-the- season awarded winners were also announced today.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was named Best Goalkeeper of the Season, Torino’s Gleison Bremer Best Defender of the Season, Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic Best Midfielder of the Season and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile Best Striker of the Season.
