Bayelsa Queens reign as NWFL Super 6 champions

BAYELSA Queens have emerged as the champions of Nigerian wowen’s football following a 2-1 win over Nasarawa Amazons at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City yesterday.

The victory confirmed Bayelsa Queens as the winners of the Tulcan Energy Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Super 6 title and also earned them a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Bayelsa side needed only a draw against Nasarawa to claim the title but, led by tournament top scorer Gift Monday, they notched up their fifth straight win.

Monday, who is on loan from FC Robo of Lagos for the Super 6, scored twice yesterday to take her tally to an incredible 12 goals in five matches.

The young striker netted in the first and 24th minutes, while Bashirat Amoo scored Nasarawa Amazons’ goal.

In the other Tulcan Energy NWFL Super 6 encounter yesterday, Rivers Angels held tournament hosts Edo Queens to a 0-0 draw. With the result, Rivers Angels ended the competition with eight points, while Edo Queens garnered five points.

Naija Ratels of Abuja were the whipping girls of the competition as they lost all their matches.

Top scorer Monday, who has inexplicably not been included in the Super Falcons’ provisional squad for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, was unsurprisingly named the competition’s Most Valuable Player.

Bayelsa Queens were presented with a cheque for N5 million for winning the trophy.
