Outcome of Joshua vs Usyk rematch to determine Fury’s retirement decision

THE result of the rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will determine if Tyson Fury will stick to his retirement plan, according to promoter Bob Arum.

Undefeated World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Fury announced his retirement from the sport after beating fellow Briton Dillian White in April, but there is widespread belief in boxing circles he could return to action if a juicy fight becomes available.

Arum, of Top Rank Promotion, believes Fury will wait and see the outcome of the Joshua versus Usyk rematch on 23 July before deciding whether to continue his career or stay retired.

Arum insisted that other than fighting the Nigerian-Briton Joshua or Ukrainian Usyk, no one else in the heavyweight division would interest Fury who holds a record of 23 knockouts, one draw and no defeats in 33 fights.

In the last three years, 33-year-old Fury has had big money-spinning bouts against Deontay Wilder and Whyte, raking in millions, and he is regarded as the best heavyweight around.

However, he is yet to unify the titles, with Usyk holding the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organisation and International Boxing Federation belts after taking them off Joshua in their first fight last year.

The belts are on the line in the rematch, and Fury could be tempted to face the winner in order to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Some boxing insiders have posited that Fury will choose to stay retired if Usyk (undefeated in 19 fights, with 13 knockouts) beats Joshua (24 wins, 22 by knockout, and two defeats in 26 fights) because of the Ukrainian’s style.

“We’ll have to see if the fans are correct, considering there’s an excellent chance that Joshua will lose the rematch with Usyk,” American Arum told Fighthype yesterday.

“Fury is going to wait until the Joshua fight comes out with Usyk, and then he’ll make a determination if he wants to continue.

“Other than fighting the winner of Joshua versus Usyk, there’s really nothing there of interest to Tyson Fury, so we’ll have to see.”
