Peseiro confirms Super Eagles appointment ‘with pride and joy’

JOSE Peseiro has described how pleased he is to be named the head coach of the Super Eagles.

The Portuguese was announced by the Nigeria Football Federation on May 15 as the permanent successor to Gernot Rohr, but with the caveat that the appointment was subject to Peseiro signing the contract papers.

The 62-year-old ended all lingering doubt about his position today when he took to social media to confirm the deal.

“Pride! It is with great pride and joy that I am the coach of one of the greatest football nations in the world,” he tweeted via his verified account.

“Commanding the Super Eagles starts with knowing how to respect history, value it and be inspired by its roots.”

The former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia head coach then promised not to let down Nigerian football fans, who are still reeling from the effects of the country’s failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“Over 200 million Nigerians, from all states and ethnicities, want the same thing: success,” he wrote.

“We will work with great ambition, so that in the end we can finally call Nigeria the ‘four-time African champions’!”

Peseiro’s first matches as Super Eagles head coach will be the friendlies against Mexico on May 28 and Ecuador on June 2, both in the United States of America.

He will then take charge of the side in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone at home on June 9 and away to Mauritius on June 13.

Peseiro had first been announced as Super Eagles head coach in December but the deal eventually fell through and he announced in February that he had no agreement with the NFF.
