APC presidential primary: Why, how Tinubu emerged winner

…We started massive consultation in 2020 – Babachir Lawal
…He started as far 1999, says Oropo

FACTS emerged today why and how frontline politician and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, won the just concluded All Progressives Congress presidential primaries defeating other aspirants that contested for the ticket.

NaijaTimes gathered that notwithstanding the consensus diversionary tactic that initially reared its head when APC national chairman, Adamu Abdullahi announced the name of Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate.

Explaining how the Jagaban of Borgu kingdom clinched the ticket, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal said Tinubu, who is a member of the campaign team said the group started massive consultation in 2020 on how to win the primary.

His words, “We started early enough and I knew it was virtually impossible to lose at this stage after the hard work and energy exerted to get this far.

“For instance, in the South-South we only have away Rivers State to Rotimi Amaechi but for Bayelsa, it was a done deed, Delta, Akwa Ibom we initially left it for Akpabio but after joining us today we are sure of at least 80 percent and Edo we were sure of 80 percent compliant.

“Then across the north, we were sure of 60 percent compliant because as of two weeks ago, 1407 delegates were already in our kitty but with the turn of events here today (yesterday) I can boastfully say that we already have 1900 votes.

“We under projected by 100 delegates and that position has not changed but as the voting is ongoing we are still very sure of victory for Tinubu.

“As you know every politician goes into an election to win but in this case, Tinubu had a political structure that you can’t fault because it has a national spread.”

Asked how the campaign team capture the southeast delegates notwithstanding not going there, Lawal said, “it was easy for us because we had critical stakeholders and governors working for us in the region.

“Three days to primaries we invited some of these delegates to Abuja and several calls were made to critical stakeholders too. Where we can’t reach some of the stakeholders we call Tinubu to help us out and he was always willing to make such calls.

“Tinubu has a political structure that’s truly national so we had no problem penetrating the northeast, north-central, northwest, southwest, southeast, and the south-south.”

Also commenting on Tinubu’s emergence, a political analyst and Editor with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Kamal Tayo Oropo said, “The thing is: Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not start his presidential journey today. He started way back before 1999: during the ill-fated third republic.

“He remained consistent, collaborative and focused. He took risks as a frontline pro-democracy activist and funder. He respected Nigeria as a country — that to be president of this heterogeneous country where mutual mistrust reign supreme, you must build bridges of trust.”

According to Oropo, “Tinubu did not just emerge from the corners of his room to insult the country of over 200 million people, the world’s most populous and influential black nation, with ‘I want to be president of Nigeria’.

“He did not just wait for one political opportunism to deceive himself that he was popular. He worked, worked and worked. He was already very successful before ever joining politics…. in tandem with political philosophy of Obafemi Awolowo,” he stated.

Oropo further explained that Lion of Burdillon as the APC standard bearer is also called did not join politics for ‘a sa jeun’, “before politics Tinubu was well fed.

“After the injustice of June 12, 30 years ago, denying Tinubu presidency will be the next biggest travesty of justice in Nigeria. It will be a great political disincentive to hard work and patience in realising one’s life ambition.”

He continued, “Tinubu formed the Action Congress (AC) — stepped down for an Atiku Abubakar. Went back to reform the party into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) — again stepped down for a Nuhu Ribadu. In the alliance that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC), his ACN was the most consequential party.

“Tinubu had a lot of arguments in his favour to insist on ‘presidency or nothing’ in 2015, but willingly and without media frenzy, ceded the post to PMB.

“He even endured the backstabbing (e don tey wey dem don dey backstab dis man) of emerging the veepee, he moved to the background and supported the party like crazy. President of Nigeria or not respect Tinubu,” Oropo stated.
