Afenifere welcomes death sentence for killers of Fasoranti’s daughter

APEX pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has commended the judiciary over the death sentence given to the killers of a daughter of its Leader, Mrs. Olufunke Olakunrin.

AHigh Court in Ondo sentenced three out of four suspected killers of the 58-year-old daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Responding to the court verdict, the national publicity secretary of the organization, Comrade Jare Ajayi, stated that the judgement was an indication that justice can be adroitly dispensed in Nigeria if the judiciary is allowed to function unfettered.

The group also reiterated its call for state police to stop all acts of terrorism in the country.

Olakurin was gruesomely murdered in June 2019 at Oore in Odigbo local government of Ondo State after a visit to her father in Akure, the state capital.

Afenifere commended the Nigeria Police Force for diligently investigating and prosecuting the case. He also commended the Ondo State government and the judiciary for their diligence in handling the case.

“The diligence prosecution and final resolution of the case will go a long way in rekindling the confidence of the public in the judiciary.”

He advised that the kind of diligence and effective process deployed in the case should be extended to all other cases “in such a manner that justice would be truly and promptly dispensed without regard to the status or inclinations of those involved.”

The group however charged the authorities to prevent the acts of terrorism and murder by stepping up security in the country and allow state police to be formed by states that are desired to do so.

“For, if there are states’ and local governments’ police system in Nigeria, the extent of terrorism and sundry crimes would not as much as it is presently,” Ajayi added.
