Mauritius 2022: Team Nigeria clinches two more gold medals in relays, discus

TEAM Nigeria had a fruitful Day 3 at the African Athletics Championships in Mauritius today, adding two more gold medals to their haul.

Having won one gold medal through Tobi Amusan in women’s 100m hurdles yesterday, the country now has three and is third in the medal table behind Kenya and South Africa.

The highlight of today’s performance was the 4x100m women’s final which the Nigerian team won convincingly.

The quartet of Praise Idamadudu, Tima Godbless, Praise Ofoku and Amusan sprinted to gold in 44.45 seconds.

South Africa finished a distant second in 44.87s, while Gambia was third in 44.97s.

The second gold of the day was won in women’s discus, where Chioma Onyekwere triumphed with her best throw of 58.18m.

It is the Nigerian record holder’s fourth African Championships medal since 2016 when she first represented the country.

She bagged bronze in both the shot put and discus in Durban, South Africa in 2016 and discus gold in Asaba in 2018.

Today, Onyekwere beat Nora Atim Monie of Cameroon to second place, while another Nigerian, Obiageri Amaechi, clinched bronze.

However, the Nigerian men were not as impressive as their women today. The quartet of Raymond Ekevwo, Nicholas Mabilo, Ogho-Oghene Egwero and Seye Ogunlewe narrowly missed out on a medal by finishing fourth in the 4x100m final in 39.98s.

Kenya won the event’s gold medal in 39.28s, with South Africa second in 39.79s and Zimbabwe third in 39.81s.
