Aribo fired up for next season after ‘unforgettable’ 70-game campaign

JOE Aribo is already looking ahead to next season after the busiest campaign of his young career.

The Super Eagles midfielder was involved in 70 games for club and country in the 2021/2022 season as Nigeria and Rangers competed on several fronts.

The 25-year-old rounded off the long campaign with the Super Eagles friendlies in the United States of America against Mexico and Ecuador, and the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome, leading him to reflect on a long season.

“Grateful to have played 70 games this season, I just wanna thank God for getting me through it,” he tweeted last night.

“A season full of ups and downs but unforgettable memories were created. Can’t wait to get going next season. Thank you to all the fans for your continued support.”

It was indeed an unforgettable season for Aribo as he started the campaign with the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds in early August 2021 and ended it with the AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone in Abuja last Thursday.

He was on the bench for Monday’s record-breaking 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco.

In between the Champions League qualifying rounds tie against Malmo in August, which Rangers lost and dropped down to the Europa League, and last Thursday, Aribo was heavily involved for both club and country.

Aribo played a key role as Rangers reached the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals, losing the former and winning the latter.

He scored Rangers’ only goal in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville in May as the match ended 1-1 before the Germans won on penalties.

In all, Aribo played 57 games for Rangers in all competitions last season.

He then appeared 13 times for the Super Eagles, starting from the 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Liberia in September.

His schedule also included other World Cup and AFCON qualifiers as well as the rescheduled 2021 AFCON held in Cameroon in January this year.
