SUPER Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro believes he and his team have room for improvement even as he felt they restored the pride of Nigerians on Monday.
The national team of Africa’s most populous country produced the widest-margin win in the nation’s history when they defeated Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Agadir, Morocco on Monday.
Victor Osimhen scored four of the goals as he completed his first Super Eagles hat-trick, while Terem Moffi scored twice.
One goal each from Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Oghenekaro Etebo and Emmanuel Dennis sealed the historic victory, which eclipsed the previous record of a 10-1 win over Dahomey (now Benin Republic) set in 1959.
Despite the huge win, Peseiro insisted he would concentrate on making the team even better as they seek to win their first AFCON title since 2013.
“We achieved our goal of points won, grew as a group and conquered a historical record, always based on fundamental values: team spirit and mutual help,” Peseiro wrote on Twitter today.
“We made the Nigerian nation proud. We are focused on improving our work to achieve our goals. #SoarSuperEagles.”
Earlier, Peseiro had highlighted the team spirit in the Eagles camp when he explained the 10th goal against Sao Tome and Principe scored by Watford forward Dennis.
“I appointed Victor Osimhen as our designated penalty taker and he gave Dennis the opportunity to score his first international goal from the spot,” Peseiro said.
The prolific Osimhen has now scored 15 goals in 23 appearances for the Super Eagles and is on pace to beat the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 international goals in 62 caps.
