Super Falcons retain Africa’s No.1 spot in FIFA ranking as WAFCON foes slip

THE Super Falcons have remained unchanged in the latest FIFA ranking for women’s national teams released by the world governing body today.

The Nigerian side are ranked 39th in the world and first in Africa, the same positions they held at the last ranking in March.

The nine-time African champions however increased their points total by 7.36 to 1604.42.

Nigeria’s major group opponents at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations starting on July 2 in Morocco, South Africa, however have mixed results in the rankings.

While Banyana Banyana dropped in the global ranking from 57th to 58th, they rose in Africa from fourth to third, overtaking Ghana.

South Africa’s ranking points also dropped by a marginal 0.23.

Nigeria’s other group opponents in Morocco, Botswana and Burundi, are ranked much lower.

Botswana are ranked 152nd in the world and 29th in Africa, gaining two spots globally but retaining their spot on the continent.

Burundi are new entrants in the ranking, coming in at 39th in Africa and 169th in the world.

The African top five is made up of Nigeria (39th in the world), Cameroon (54th in the world), South Africa (58th in the world), Ghana (59th in the world) and Cote d’Ivoire (64th in the world).

Tunisia (72nd in the world), Equatorial Guinea (75th in the world), Morocco (77th in the world), Algeria (79th in the world) and Mali (80th in the world) complete the African top 10.

The United States of America retain their global No.1 spot, followed by Sweden, France, Netherlands and Germany.

FIFA says a record 181 teams are now in the ranking, with new entrants Seychelles, Burundi and British Virgin Islands taking the total number of teams now included in it to 181 from FIFA’s 211 member associations.
