CAF Awards to return in July after Covid-enforced absence

THE CAF Awards for 2022 will be held in Morocco in July, the Confederation of African Football announced today.

The last time the awards were held was in 2019, with the plans for the last two years affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

CAF has confirmed that this year’s award will take place on July 21, two days before the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations also in Morocco.

“This year’s edition of the prestigious award ceremony for African football, the CAF Awards 2022, will return on Thursday, 21 July 2022 in Morocco,” CAF said in a press release made available to Naija Times.

“The CAF Awards will be held ahead of the final of Africa’s flagship women’s competitions, TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 20223 scheduled to take place between 02 July – 23 July 2022.

“The event will also coincide with the two-year anniversary of the launch of the CAF Women’s Football Strategy.”

CAF added that a new category for Interclubs Women’s Player of the Year has been introduced following the successful first edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League in November 2021.

The major prizes on offer remain the Men’s Player of the Year and the Women’s Player of the Year awards.

Other categories include Interclub Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, National Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Club of the Year and Goal of the Year.

The winners will be decided by votes from captains and coaches of the African national teams, selected journalists, CAF Technical Study Group and CAF legends, according to the continental ruling body.

The period under review for the awards is from September 2021 to June 2022.

The last edition of the CAF Awards was held in 2019 in Hurghada, Egypt, with
Sadio Mane of Senegal and Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala claiming the men’s and women’s African Player of the Year prizes respectively.
