EKITI 2022: APC’s Oyebanji declared winner

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, winner of the 2022 Ekiti governorship election that held across the state on Saturday, June 18.

Oyebanji was declared winner of the election by the Returning Officer, Prof Kayode Adebowale, who also is the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, at about 3:30a.m today, Sunday morning, following the conclusion of the results collation at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Office in Ado-Ekiti.

The APC candidate polled a total of 187,057 votes to emerged victorious, defeating his major rivals in the contest, Olusegun Oni, a former governor of the state and candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Olabisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who poll 82,211 votes and 67,457 to emerge second and third positions respectively.

Oyebanji won in 15 out of the 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state where the election held. He only lost in Efon Alaye LGA, where the PDP candidate took the shine and polled a total of 6,303 votes.

With the declaration, Oyebanji is now set to take over from the incumbent governor, Dr John Kayode Fayemi, whose tenure will end in October.

The Governor-Elect had during the governorship debate last week, in one of his final public appeals to voters said, “No society can grow greater than the vision and dream of its leader.”

“I am offering myself to lead our people into a prosperous society. I am bringing to the table 11 years of experience in the public service at the state level, two years at the federal level.

“I am going to aggregate the best brains of Ekiti all over the world to help me achieve my dreams,” he stated.

Notwithstanding adjudged a peaceful election by independent observers, the election was marred with reports of vote buying and violence.
