Onyekuru joins Turkey’s Adana Demirspor on loan with long-term option

Henry Onyekuru has joined Turkish club Adana Demirspor on loan from Olympiacos of Greece.

The Super Eagles forward, who previously played for Turkish giants Galatasaray, completed the move today.

The loan is for the 2022/2023 season, with an option to make it permanent at the end of the term.

Adana Dermirspor will sign on the former Everton, Monaco and Anderlecht forward on a three-year contract if they pick up the option of a permanent deal at the end of the loan stint.

Speaking at the signing ceremony today, Adana Demirspor President Murat Sancak said: “They had offered us a deal before. I hadn’t thought about it because of the cost.

“We were going to get a player on the left wing. It was suggested to us at the last minute. We got the player after intense negotiations for the last two days. One year loan. One year later, if both parties are satisfied, we have the option to buy.

“If we are satisfied, we will sign a three-year contract. We have the option to buy until June 30. If we participate in the European cups, there is a compulsory purchase option, but it may not stay there. We can get it beforehand.”

Adana finished ninth in the Turkish Super League last season.

Onyekuru, 25, started his European sojourn at Belgian club KAS Eupen in 2015, from where he joined Everton for €7m in 2017.

The Nigeria international did not make a single appearance for Everton, instead going out on loan to Anderlecht and Galatasaray.

He made the switch to Monaco for €13.5m in 2019 and had two other loan spells at Galatasaray. He joined Olympiacos for €4.5m last year, contributing just one goal and one assist in 27 appearances.
