CAF Awards: Nigeria’s Simon dropped as Mane, Salah, Mahrez make 10-man shortlist

Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Moses Simon has been dropped from the list of nominees for the 2022 CAF Awards Men’s Player of the Year category, with frontrunners Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez left in the race.

Simon was one of the 30 nominees named by the Confederation of African Football for the continent’s biggest individual honour 11 days ago but he was left out this morning when a 10-man shortlist was announced.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for July 21 in Rabat, Morocco, two days before the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in the North African country.

Other contenders still in the running for the Men’s Player of the Year award include Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubacar and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.

In the highly contested CAF Coach of the Year category, Aliou Cisse, Pitso Mosimane, Carlos Queiroz, Tom Saintfiet and Walid Regragui made the final cut.

The Player of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year cayego have 10 nominees each, whist the Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, National Team of the Year and Club of the Year have five nominees each.

Super Eagles and FC Copenhagen youngster Akinkunmi Amoo has also been left out of the final shortlist for the Young Player of the Year award, after being included in the previous nominations.

CAF explained that winners of each category will be decided by a voting panel made up of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, head coaches and captains of national teams and clubs involved at the group stage of the Interclub competitions for the 2021/22 season.

The women’s categories’ final shortlist will be announced in due course, according to CAF.
