Man United confirm £55m deal to sign Martinez from Ajax

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Ajax Amsterdam for the purchase of Lisandro Martinez, the English club announced today.

Martinez will become Manchester United’s third signing of the summer after Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord and free agent Christian Eriksen.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez, subject to medical, to player terms being finalised, and to UK visa requirements,” the club stated on their official website today.

The deal for the Argentina defender is believed to be worth £46.8 million rising to £55.3m when add-ons are included.

He will sign a five-year contract with the option of an additional year after his medical and United Kingdom visa processing have been completed.

Martinez will become United’s second most expensive defender in history, behind only Harry Maguire who cost £80m.

United will make a final announcement in the next few days.

Martinez, 24, joined Ajax in 2019 from Argentine club Defensa y Justicia for €7m and made 118 appearances for the Amsterdam side, winning two Eredivisie titles.

He can play at centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield.

With his signing United will be looking to offload Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe.
