End of Nigerian era at Rangers as Ajax confirm €26.5m Bassey deal

Ajax have completed the acquisition of Calvin Bassey from Rangers, the Dutch giants announced today.

The Super Eagles defender joined the Eredivisie champions on a five-year deal for €26.5 million, the record fee for Rangers player sales.

“Ajax has reached an agreement with Rangers FC and Calvin Bassey for the transfer of the defender to Amsterdam,” the Dutch champions stated on their official website today.

“The English-Nigerian player has signed a contract with Ajax that will take effect immediately and will run for five seasons, until June 30, 2027.

“Ajax will pay a transfer fee of €23 million to Rangers FC. Including variables, that amount could increase to €26.5 million.”

Bassey, who joined Rangers for only £230,000 in 2020 from Leicester City U-23s, had two years left on his contract.

“I’m Calvin Bassey and I’m here,” he said in a short video posted on Ajax’s Twitter account, wearing his new club’s kit.

Bassey, born in Modena, Italy to a Nigerian father, featured 50 times for Rangers last season as they reached the UEFA Europa League final and won the Scottish Cup.

He is the third Nigeria international to leave Rangers this season after Leon Balogun, who was released, and Joe Aribo, who joined Southampton.

Bassey arrived in Austria today to join Ajax’s pre-season training camp.
