Commonwealth Games: Team Nigeria start strong in table tennis

Nigeria recorded two team victories in the men’s and women’s events of table tennis as the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games began today.

The women’s team, consisting of Fatimo Bello, Esther Oribamise and Offiong Edem, defeated St Vincent and Grenadines 3-0 in their first match.

In the doubles match, Bello and Edem beat Unica Velox and Leah Cumberbatch 11-6, 11-2, 11-5.

In Singles 1, Oribamise dismissed Shanecia Delpesche 3-0 (11 – 2, 11 – 3, 11 – 2), while Singles 2 also ended 3-0 in favour of Edem over Cumberbatch (11 – 1, 11 – 2, 11 – 3).

In the men’s team event, Quadri Aruna, Olajide Omotayo and Amadi Omeh progressed to the next round with a 3-0 victory over South Africa.

In the doubles, Omotayo and Omeh overran Theo Cogill and Chetan Nathoo 3-0 (11 -5, 11-5, 11 -5).

In Singles 1, world No.12 Aruna beat Shaun Jones 3-0 (11 -6,11 – 3, 12 -10), just as Omotayo thrashed Nathoo 3-0 in Singles 2 (11 – 9, 11 -6, 11-6).

Team Nigeria will continue their quest for medals today as the Games continue.

The country is represented by 94 athletes in nine sports in the Games, which will end on August 8.
