Osun Osogbo: 2022 festival begins with ‘Iwopopo’

THE world renowned Osun Osogbo Festival in Osun State begins today with the opening rite of ‘Iwopopo’ which is the traditional cleansing of the ancient city, preparing it for the massive ceremonial activities ahead.

  The festival is an annual traditional event held in celebration of the popular Yoruba goddess of fertility, Osun. It is also believed to signify the renewal of the contract between humans and the deity.

   The 2022 edition of the festival, will as usual hold at the sacred World Heritage Site, the Osun Grove in the ancient city and will feature an array colourful cultural and traditional religious activities.

   According to the timetable released by organising committee, this year’s festival is scheduled to hold from August 1 – 29 in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

   The opening activity of ‘Iwopopo’ will be followed by the lighting of the 500-year-old 16-point lamp called ‘Atupa oloju merindinlogun’, which holds three days after the cleansing of the land. This is followed with ‘Bibo Ade Oba Osogbo’, which is meant to honour past kings of Osogbo on Monday, August 8.

    On August 11 is  the traditional selection of the young virgin maiden from a royal lineage (Dida Ifa Arugba) who will offer this year’s sacrifices to the deity will take place, while the grand finale of the festival, ‘Osun Ajigun’ holds August 29.

   The festival as usual, will be attended by tourists and traditional religious worshippers, particularly the Osun adherents from around the world.
