Birmingham 2022: Team Nigeria’s Nwachukwu, Oluwafemiayo win gold, break world records

Team Nigeria athletes, Chiemere Nwachukwu and Folashade Oluwafemiayo, won gold medals and broke world records tonight at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The two phenomenal performances came within 30 minutes of each from two different venues as Team Nigeria took their tally to five gold medals.

First, Nwachukwu broke the world record twice in the women’s F42-44 discus event of para-athletics, first with a throw of 34.84m, then with 36.56m to win the gold.

Oluwafemiayo followed up minutes later with her own world record and gold medal in para-powerlifting.

She produced the feats in the heavyweight category, lifting a series that started with 130kg, then moved up to 150kg and then the 155kg world record to score a cumulative 123.4 points.

Another Nigerian, Bose Omolayo, finished second behind Oluwafemiayo and clinched silver, lifting 145kg and scoring 115.2 points.

Also today, three Team Nigeria athletes reached the semi-finals of their boxing events, two women and one man, all guaranteed at least bronze medals.
