Cyril Dessers joins Cremonese from Genk for €6.5m

Cyril Dessers has completed his switch from Genk to Cremonese, the Italian club confirmed today.

The Super Eagles striker joins on a five-year contract believed to be worth around €6.5 million.

“US Cremonese announces that it has definitively acquired the right to Cyriel Dessers’ sports performances from KRC Genk,” the Serie A newcomers announced on their official website today.

“Born in Tongeren (Belgium) on 8 December 1994, a forward, Dessers is the top scorer of the 2021/22 edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League thanks to the 10 goals he scored with the Feyenoord shirt, where he played on loan for a season.”

Dessers, 27, was born in Belgium to a Nigerian father but began his senior career in The Netherlands with Breda with whom he scored 29 goals in 40 second division appearances.

He then moved on to Utrecht in 2017, scoring 19 goals in 56 games, and Heracles Almelo in 2019 (18 goals in 29 games) before making a €4m switch to Genk in Belgium in 2020.

He scored 11 goals in 43 appearances for Genk but was more prolific on loan to Dutch club Feyenoord, where he netted 20 times in 41 games and inspired them to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League final with his 10 goals.

Dessers played for Belgium’s youth national teams, but has switched international allegiance to Nigeria and has scored once in three appearances for the Super Eagles.

Cremonese were promoted to the Serie A at the end of last season after finishing second in the 20-team Serie B.
