Aribo’s Southampton stun Chelsea as Iwobi bags assist for Everton, Okereke scores

Southampton bounced back from Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Manchester United to edge out Chelsea 2-1 tonight, while Alex Iwobi once again starred for Everton.

The Saints fell behind to Raheem Sterling’s strike but fought back to claim their second Premier League win of the season.

Sterling scored from close range in the 23rd minute, sweeping home after the ball fell to him in the Southampton box.

It was the former Manchester City forward’s third goal of the season but the euphoria was shortlived as the hosts struck back quickly.

Romeo Lavia, the 18-year-old midfielder, drew Southampton level with a sweet strike on the edge of Chelsea’s box through a crowd of bodies in the 28th minute.

Adam Armstrong hit the winning goal in first-half added time, scoring from inside the Chelsea box, and Southampton held on in the second half to go level with the Blues in the table.

Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo was brought on in the 60th minute for Lavia and played a big part as the Saints kept their lead until the end.

This is the first time Thomas Tuchel has lost back-to-back away games since taking the managerial reins at Chelsea in early 2021.

Chelsea have now also lost at least two of their opening five games to a Premier League campaign for just the second time in 27 seasons, according to Opta statistics.

At Elland Road, Super Eagles midfielder Iwobi was again impressive as Everton drew 1-1 with their hosts Leeds United.

Iwobi set up Anthony Gordon with a brilliant through ball in the 17th minute to give Everton the lead and played the full game.

Leeds United got back in the contest 10 minutes into the second half through Luis Sinisterra to prevent Everton from securing their first Premier League win of the season.

At Craven Cottage, Fulham continued their impressive start to the season by beating Brighton 2-1.

Aleksandar Mitrovic handed Fulham the lead with his 100th goal for the club three minutes after the break, and the promoted side extended their advantage via a Lewis Dunk own goal seven minutes later.

Alexis MacAllister pulled one back for the visitors on the hour mark but Fulham saw out the victory and climbed up to sixth in the table with eight points from five games.

At Selhurst Park, Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka was a 68th minute substitute for Brentford, who scored late to earn a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

In Italy, Nigerian striker David Okereke scored a late consolation goal for Cremonese as they lost 3-1 at Inter Milan.

Okereke started in attack along with his compatriot Cyril Dessers and they gave the Inter defence problems, but the hosts’ superior quality and experience saw them through.

Joaquin Correa, Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez gave Inter a 3-0 lead before Okereke reduced the deficit in the 90th minute with a spectacular rising shot as Cremonese remain pointless after four matches.

Okereke played the full game while Dessers lasted 67 minutes.

In other Serie A fixtures tonight, AS Roma defeated Monza 3-0 while Sassuolo and champions AC Milan played a 0-0 draw.
