Headies 2022: Wizkid, Patoranking, Olamide win big

…Sanwo-Olu reassures of govt support to creative industry

AFROBEATS as a Nigerian sound resonated in far away Atlanta, Georgia, the United States of America as the 15th edition of highly coveted awards, The Headies, held on Sunday at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. 

  Singers, Wizkid, Olamide, and Adekunle Gold were among the winners on the night. Wizkid top the list, winning Best R&B single of the year, Best Collaboration, and Song of the Year with his hit song ‘Essence’ featuring Tems from his ‘Made in Lagos (Deluxe Edition).

     Reggae/dancehall star, Patoranking, followed with two awards – Best Recording and Best Reggae/Dancehall album. Olamide won the Best Rap Album category with his album, Carpe Diem. Adekunle Gold, on his part, won the Songwriter of the Year with ‘Sinner’.

    Songwriter and singer, Buju BNXN, won the 2022 Headies highly covet Next Rated award. He defeated singers like Ayra Starr, Zinoleesky, Lojay and Ruger to walk away with the award.

   The 25 years old walk away with the highly coveted prize that came with a 2022 Bentley Bentayga worth over ₦75 million.

    n his acceptance speech, BNXN dedicated the award to his late mother who he said died of breast cancer. He also appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was present at the event in Atlanta, to help him with shipping the car to Nigeria from Atlanta because of the cost of shipping into the country.

   Buzzing act, Bright Goya popularly known as Goya Menor won the Street Hop Artiste with his Amenor Amapiano remix, featuring Nektunez. AQ won the Lyricist on the Roll with his The Last Cypher.

   As a reward for his tenacity, passion and hard work over the years, the multi-music genre artiste and retro musician, Ibejii won the Best Alternative Album, just as Waje clinched the Best Vocal Performance (Female), while Ayra Starr proved that she is indeed a delight to watch with her ein of the Viewer’s Choice category.    For having some of the killer beats, Sarz on the beat was voted as the Producer of the Year, even as Kcee was the Best Inspirational single. Ladipoe walked away with the Best Rap Single. TG Omori emerged the Best Video Director of the Year.    Meanwhile, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who is in Atlanta for the awards, reiterated 

the government’s commitment to the creative industry.

  As a music award, ‘The Headies’ was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria. Its noble aim is to recognise outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.     

The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is usually broadcast live on HipTV to viewers across the country.
