Several Nigerian stars were in action tonight as the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League group phase games got underway across Europe.
In one of the evening kick-offs, Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze, who wore the captain’s armband, scored one goal and assisted another in Villarreal’s 4-3 win over Lech Poznan in a Conference League Group C clash at Estadio de la Ceramica.
In a night kick-off at Old Trafford, Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq started and lasted until half-time as Real Sociedad shocked Manchester United 1-0 in their Europa League Group E fixture.
Brais Mendez scored the only goal from the penalty box as Real Sociedad scored their first-ever goal against Manchester United and recorded their first-ever win against an English team.
In the same Group E, Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was a second-half substitute as his Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia were beaten 3-0 at home by FC Sheriff of Moldova.
Uzoho conceded two of the goals, one from the penalty spot, while two little-known Nigerians, Rasheed Akanbi and Iyayi Believe Atiemwen, scored for FC Sheriff.
In a Europa League Group G clash in France, Super Eagles forward Moses Simon was a 69th minute as Nantes defeated Olympiacos 2-1.
Three Nigerians were involved in Turkey as Sivasspor hosted Slavia Prague, with Super Eagles forward Peter Olayinka scoring for the visitors in a 1-1 Conference League Group G draw.
Sivasspor started with Nigerian striker Leke James, while Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa was a 73rd minute substitute for the club he joined recently.
In other games not involving Nigerians tonight, Arsenal beat FC Zurich 2-1 in Switzerland, Roma were stunned 2-1 by Ludogorets in Romania, while Lazio outscored Feyenoord 4-2 in Italy, all in the Europa League.
In the Conference League, Istanbul Basaksehir thrashed their hosts Hearts 4-0, while Nice and FC Cologne played 1-1 in France, and West Ham defeated FC FCSB 3-1 in London.
