Rangers’ Champions League group stage match at home to Victor Osimhen’s Napoli has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday following discussions between Scottish police, the Glasgow club and UEFA.
European football’s governing body announced today that the tie at Ibrox Stadium was shifted because of the strain on security services following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.
“This is due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” UEFA said in an official statement today.
The UEFA Youth League game between both teams originally set for Tuesday has also been moved to a 2pm kick-off on Wednesday.
UEFA also ruled that no away fans will be present at Ibrox this week and, to even things out, Rangers’ supporters will not be admitted for the return leg in Naples on October 26.
Rangers started their Champions League Group A campaign with a 4-0 defeat at Ajax Amsterdam, while Napoli thrashed Liverpool 4-1 in Naples, both last Wednesday.
Osimhen is expected to miss the clash at Ibrox after sustaining an injury and getting substituted off late into the first half of Napoli’s big win over Liverpool.
Before his injury, the Nigeria international had an eventful time, hitting the post in the first minute and seeing his penalty saved by Alisson.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports reported that all UEFA competition matches are expected to go ahead as planned across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
All Premier League and English Football League matches this weekend were postponed as a mark of respect for the Queen, who died aged 96 after being on the throne for 70 years.
All games in the Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship and Women’s FA Cup were also postponed.
