Yusuf Otubanjo’s strike voted Conference League Goal of the Week

Nigerian forward Yusuf Otubanjo’s brilliant strike for Pyunik Yerevan against Slovan Bratislava has been named the best goal of the second matchday of this season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

Otubanjo scored the Armenian top flight side’s second goal as they defeated the Slovakians 2-0 last night to earn their first three points in the European competition’s Group H.

The 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup silver medallist with the Golden Eaglets, who also played for the Nigeria U-23s, netted with a superb strike in the 36th minute to give Pyunik the much-needed win.

Otubanjo received the ball from midfield and evaded his marker with a brilliant piece of skill before unleashing a stunning shot from 25 yards that flew into the Slovan Bratislava net, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

“Yusuf Otubanjo’s sensational strike wins Goal of the Week,” the Conference League Twitter account announced today.

Otubanjo, who celebrated his 30th birthday four days ago, has made 13 appearances for Pyunik in all competitions this season, recording three goals and three assists.

Some of his appearances came in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League qualifying round ties before Pyunik dropped down to the Conference League.

Otubanjo started his career with Julius Berger in Nigeria and has been in Europe for over a decade. He has played for clubs in Spain with Atletico Madrid B, Austria with Red Bull Salzburg and LASK, as well as in Slovakia with MSK Zilina among others.
