Troost-Ekong gets first start, Okoye benched as Watford, Sunderland draw

Super Eagles stars William Troost-Ekong and Maduka Okoye had contrasting fortunes today as their club Watford were held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland.

While centre-back Troost-Ekong started and played all 90 minutes of the English Championship clash, goalkeeper Okoye was an unused substitute.

It was only Troost-Ekong’s first start in the league after previously having a seven-minute appearance off the bench at the beginning of the season in early August.

The Super Eagles vice-captain was either not in the matchday squad or an unused substitute in seven straight games since that 1-1 draw with West Brom on August 8.

Troost-Ekong’s first Watford start in the league has come at the right time, just 10 days to Nigeria’s friendly against Algeria in Oran, for which he has been invited.

The 29-year-old defender’s only start this season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to MK Dons on August 23.

On his part, Okoye’s only appearance for Watford since joining them permanently this summer was in that same Carabao Cup defeat, in which he conceded two goals.

He has been completely out of the matchday squad six times this season, and today’s appearance on the bench is his fifth.

Okoye, 23, will also be in Algeria for the Super Eagles friendly after taking some time off international duty.

In today’s game, Watford led twice through Keinan Davis and a Luke O’Nien own goal, but Sunderland fought back each time with strikes from Aji Alese and Jewison Bennette.

Watford’s other Nigerian international, Samuel Kalu, was also an unused substitute.
