Ethan Nwaneri became the youngest player in English Premier League history in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Brentford today.
The attacking midfielder, who was born in March 2007 to a Nigerian father, replaced Fabio Vieira in the 90th minute at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Aged 15 years and 181 days, Nwaneri beat the record previously held by Harvey Elliott, who was 16 years and 30 days old when he played for Fulham in 2019.
Nwaneri has made several appearances for Arsenal Under-18s and has played for England Under-16s.
The comfortable victory over Brentford took Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League table after Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur overtook the Gunners yesterday.
Arsenal’s travelling fans greeted Nwaneri’s appearance by singing: “He’s going to school in the morning.”
William Saliba headed Arsenal into the lead in the 17th minute to send them on their way to a sixth win in seven Premier League games this season.
Gabriel Jesus made it 2-0 in the 28th minute as he headed home Granit Xhaka’s chip past Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.
It is the first time in the last seven seasons that the Gunners have scored two headed goals in the first half of a Premier League game.
Vieira, in his first Premier League start, then rounded off a dominant display with a goal from 25 yards two minutes into the second half.
Brentford, who were unbeaten in their previous three games and were eyeing fifth spot, rarely threatened Arsenal in the course of the whole game.
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka played the final 27 minutes of the game as Brentford dropped to ninth in the table.
