2022 World Translation Day: PAWA salutes Translators

*’You are very important in the preservation of World peace’

THE Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) has sent a message of solidarity to all translators on the occasion of the 2022 UNESCO World’s Translation Day which fell on Friday 30 September 2022.

In a release jointly signed by the PAWA President, Hon John Rusimbi and the Secretary General, Dr Wale Okediran, PAWA paid glowing tributes to professional translators who have played a great role in inter-connecting the different societies for the spread of information globally whether for commercial, religious or political purposes.

According to the continental Literary body; ‘’as African writers whose official languages are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese and Swahili, we rely on translators to break down all forms of communication barriers in order to bring us together to share knowledge and information which are very vital to our profession’’.

It is on record that ever since the United Nations was created, translators have played a great role in bringing all 51 founding nations on the same page which they never were earlier.

This is because, the United Nations recognizes that all civilizations and their respective cultures are crucial enablers of sustainable development.

Hence the role of a translator is very important in bringing all these different cultures together without any misunderstanding and miscommunication.

Moreover, it is obvious that even after wars, nations or groups of people still had to negotiate.

This is why it is believed that a lot of things can be achieved diplomatically without a recourse to wars if proper translations were available.

Translators are therefore also very important in the preservation of World peace.

It was in view of their very important role that the United Nations General Assembly on 24 May 2017 passed resolution 71/288 declaring September 30 International Translation Day To celebrate Translators.
