Aribo, Iwobi shine as Everton edge Southampton, Brighton hold Liverpool, Chelsea win

Joe Aribo and Alex Iwobi were both directly involved in goals today during Southampton’s home defeat to Everton in the Premier League.

Super Eagles midfielder Aribo scored his second Premier League goal of the season to give the Saints the lead, before the in-form Iwobi assisted Everton’s equaliser.

After a drab and scoreless first half, Aribo struck four minutes into the second period, picking the ball up on the edge of the Everton box and powering it beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Centre-back Conor Coady pulled Everton level just three minutes after and Nigeria international Iwobi then made his third assist of the campaign when he set up Dwight McNeil with the winning goal as Everton pounced twice in two minutes.

The victory, Everton’s second in succession after a winless start to the season, took the Toffees up to 11th spot in the table, four places above Southampton.

Also in the Premier League this afternoon, Liverpool and Brighton produced a six-goal thriller at Anfield, drawing 3-3.

Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick, first giving Brighton a 2-0 lead before the hosts turned it around and led 3-2.

The Belgian drew Brighton level with seven minutes left on the clock to complete his hat-trick, becoming the first player to score a treble against Liverpool at Anfield since Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin in 2009.

Roberto Firmino netted a brace for Liverpool, with their third coming from an Adam Webster own goal.

The draw pulled Liverpool further away from the top positions, leaving them in ninth place, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, while Brighton are fourth.

At Selhurst Park, Chelsea came from behind to beat their hosts Crystal Palace 2-1 in Graham Potter’s first Premier League game as the Blues’ manager.

Odsonne Edouard fired Palace in front early on but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised for Chelsea, before substitute Conor Gallagher struck on the stroke of full-time against the club where he had a loan spell last season.

The hard-fought win took Chelsea to fifth spot while Palace are 16th.

In other Premier League clashes today, Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka was a late substitute as his Brentford side drew 0-0 at Bournemouth, while Newcastle United defeated 10-man Fulham 4-1.
