The sports ministry has named a new caretaker body, which includes former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi, to oversee the Nigeria Professional Football League following the dissolution of the League Management Company.
The ministry announced the management committee late last night, three weeks after the federal government controversially declared the 10-year-old LMC an illegal body, claiming that it was ‘outside the purview of the statutes of the Nigeria Football Federation’.
Although the sports ministry had ordered the NFF to withdraw the LMC’s license and set up an interim committee, it is not clear if the football governing body had an input in the latest development.
“In line with the 10-year football Master Plan as approved by President Muhammadu Buhari towards the revitalisation of the Domestic League, a 10-man Interim Management Committee (IMC) is hereby set up to oversee the affairs of the League until a proper professional league board is put in place statutorily,” the ministry said in last night’s statement.
The IMC will be led by Gbenga Elegbeleye, a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission, as chairman.
The vice-chairman is veteran sports journalist and administrator Paul Bassey, while former Rangers striker and CEO of the disbanded LMC, Davidson Owumi, is the Head of Operations.
The other members of the board include billionaire businessman and owner of Remo Stars Kunle Soname, Amokachi and journalist Calvin Onwuka.
The IMC will also have representatives of the NFF and the Nigeria Police Force, with Olumide Bamiduro as secretary.
The sports ministry said “terms of reference of the Committee will be announced shortly.”
