BORNO: Many feared dead after stepping on IEDs along Maiduguri-Damboa-Chibok road

YESTERDAY, scores of drivers and travelers were reported dead after stepping on IEDs set by terrorists who were thought to be Boko Haram sect members on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Chibok road.

The terrorists reportedly entered Njilang village in Whuntafu ward of Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, where they allegedly killed three people.

This was later confirmed yesterday by sources and Umar Ibrahim, the executive chairman of the council area.

Reports suggested that the drivers and passengers were traveling on the recently reopened Maiduguri-Damboa-Chibok-Askira/Uba road when the trucks transporting them with food stepped on IEDs planted by suspected terrorists, but they were unable to confirm the number of drivers and travelers who had died due to the explosion of IEDs. Several additional people reportedly suffered injuries.

However, sources and locals reported that the armed militants entered Njilang yesterday at around 2:34am and fired intermittently at fleeing residents, killing three people and plundering stores before setting a number of homes on fire without engaging in combat.

Abubakar Usman, a passenger who escaped the IED explosion, stated in a similar manner: “The insurgents targeted certain vehicles carrying food and off-loaders.”

Chairman of Chibok Local Government Area said he was yet to get the full details of the attack.

“Yes I received a distress call today (yesterday) that one of my communities, Njilang, was attacked by armed terrorists.

“Though details were still sketchy, some callers informed me that three people were killed while infrastructure was destroyed. Other versions revealed that more than four persons were killed in the unfortunate incident.

All efforts to get confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer, Sani Shatambaya, proved abortive as at the time of report
