UCL: Napoli thrash Bassey’s Ajax as Sanusi scores, Onyedika’s Brugge win, Barca stumble

Calvin Bassey was in action tonight but could not prevent his Ajax side from suffering their heaviest ever defeat in the UEFA Champions League.

The Super Eagles defender and his teammates were helpless as rampaging Napoli, without their injured Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, won the Group A clash 6-1 in Amsterdam.

The Italians were relentless and ruthlessness in enemy territory, recovering from Mohammed Kudus’ opening goal for Ajax to run riot.

Giacomo Raspadori headed in the equaliser, while Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened their Champions League accounts on the night.

Piotr Zielinski and substitute Giovanni Simeone also struck, and Raspadori had a brace, with Ajax captain Dusan Tadic sent off late on.

In the group’s other game tonight,
Liverpool kept their second spot with a 2-0 win over Rangers at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s superb free-kick after seven minutes and Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the second half secured the sixth straight home group stage win for Liverpool, who are three points behind leaders Napoli.

In Group B, Porto defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in Portugal, with Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi scoring one of the goals.

Sanusi replaced Wendell in the 63rd minute and got on the scoresheet six minutes later to give Porto the lead.

Fellow substitute Wenderson Galeno sealed the win with his 87th minute goal as Porto got their first victory in the group.

In the same group, Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika was in full-time action as Club Brugge defeated Atletico Madrid 3-0 in Belgium to make it three wins out of three.

Kamal Sowah and Ferran Jutgla scored the goals for the Belgian champions as they surpassed Anderlecht as the club from their country with the most Champions League wins. Brugge now have 14 to Anderlecht’s 13.

In Group C, Bayern Munich continued their dominance with a 5-0 win over Viktoria Plzen, while Barcelona were beaten 1-0 by Inter Milan.

Leroy Sane scored twice for the Bavarians, with Sadio Mane, Serge Gnabry and Eric Choupo-Moting the other scorers.

Bayern have won all their three group games but Barcelona are in danger of failing to reach the knockout rounds after Hakan Calhanoglu’s strike in first-half added time condemned them to their second defeat.

Barcelona had Pedri’s goal chalked off for handball after a VAR review as Inter recorded their first Champions League victory against Spanish opposition since their 3-1 semi-final first-leg success against the same club in April 2010.

Group D saw Marseille come from behind to beat visiting 10-man Sporting Lisbon 4-1, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur played out a 0-0 draw in Germany.
