‘The goal is to use the display to further push the cartoon art form into public purview, both as a vehicle of socio-political commentary and as objects of artistic value in their own right. Current art market trends suggest an increase in demand for affordable drawings and prints worldwide’

FROM Monday October 9 through the 16th, the ace Cartoonist, Ebun Aleshinloye aka Alesh, is staging ‘Exhibition of Editorial Cartoons’, which will showcase a selection of his works, mostly commentary on the socio-political and cultural life of the nation, and by extension the continent of Africa.

The exhibition is positioned as part of the FELABRATION 2022, which celebrates the life and times of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Afrobeat legend, whose birthday is October 15. The 18th Felabration begins Monday, October 10 and ends on 16th at various venues in Lagos, and other centres around the world.

Holding at Freedom Park, 1 Hospital Road, by Broad Street, Lagos Island, Alesh’s outing is thus the kick-off event for the weeklong festival of music and art that honours the memory of the late Afrobeat creator, Fela.

It is with the support of the Cartoonists Association of Nigeria (CARTAN).

The opening reception holds Sunday, October 9 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., while on subsequent days it will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Stated Alesh, who launched the annual showcase at the Felabration 2021, “The goal is to use the display to further push the cartoon art form into public purview, both as a vehicle of socio-political commentary and as objects of artistic value in their own right. Current art market trends suggest an increase in demand for affordable drawings and prints worldwide.

“About fifty original drawings will be exhibited, and signed, limited edition giclée art prints and canvas prints will be available for sale at the event.

“Spicing up Sunday’s opening reception, Jojo, the uniquely original body percussionist will be with us, offering a sonorous medley of highlife and jazz melodies.

“Needless to say, I am particularly thrilled to be showing my work in an exhibition environment, and will be greatly honoured with your presence.”
