UCL: PSG, Dortmund, Chelsea advance, Juventus crash, Real Madrid lose

Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Benfica all booked their spots in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League tonight, while Juventus got kicked out of the competition.

In Group H, PSG recorded the biggest win of the night, trouncing Maccabi Haifa 7-2 in Paris.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe got two goals each, with Neymar also on target, while Sean Goldberg’s own goal and Carlos Soler’s strike helped PSG score seven for the first time in five seasons in the Champions League.

Abdoulaye Seck scored two headers for the visitors, who suffered the heaviest ever defeat for an Israeli club in the competition.

Maccabi Haifa could still beat Juventus for a Europa League spot after the Italian giants lost 4-3 at Benfica.

The Israeli side and Juventus have three points each, and results next week will determine who finishes third and drops down to the Europa League and who is bottom.

Juventus host PSG, while Maccabi Haifa are away to Benfica. PSG and Benfica are also tied on points and the group winners will emerge next week.

In Group E, Chelsea secured passage to the last 16 after ending Red Bull Salzburg’s 40-match unbeaten home run in all competitions in the evening kick-off.

Mateo Kovacic’s fine finish gave the visitors the lead but the hosts levelled moments after half-time through Nigerian-born Austrian international Junior Adamu, who has scored five goals in his last five matches in all competitions.

Kai Havertz bagged the winner for Chelsea when he curled the ball into the top corner on 64 minutes.

AC Milan moved up to second place behind Chelsea in the group following a 4-0 rout of Dinamo Zagreb.

The visitors from Italy went in front just before the half-time break through Matteo Gabbia and made sure of the points early in the second half through Rafael Leao and an Olivier Giroud penalty.

Robert Ljubicic scored an own goal to compound Dinamo’s woes, and they can now not finish higher than third in the group.

In Group G, Borussia Dortmund played out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Germany as both sides advanced.

It was a game of few chances but City had a penalty that Riyad Mahrez could not convert as Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score in two successive Champions League group matches for the first time.

In the group’s other fixture tonight, Sevilla defeated FC Copenhagen 3-0 as the Spaniards secured third spot and a place in the Europa League.

One of the biggest upsets of the night was in Germany, where RB Leipzig defeated champions Real Madrid 3-2 in Group F.

Josko Gvardiol nodded in the opening goal before Christopher Nkunku blasted in the second to stun the Spanish giants.

A brilliant Vinícius Junior header reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, but Timo Werner made it 3-1 before Rodrygo got a late consolation from the penalty spot with the final kick.

Real Madrid are already through while Leipzig will join them with a draw against Shakhtar Donetsk next week.

Shakhtar Donetsk played a 1-1 draw with Celtic in Glasgow to remain three points behind RB Leipzig, with the Scots bottom of the standings.
