2023: ECOWAS urges Nigerian politicians to avoid bloody battle

A 10-man ECOWAS team on a pre-election fact-finding mission yesterday advised Nigerian political parties to embrace dialogue emphasizing that the 2023 general elections shouldn’t be viewed as a bloody battle.

The delegation’s leader and former president of the Ghana Electoral Commission, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, made this call when he visited Yabagi Sani, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), in Abuja yesterday.

According to Afari-Gyan, the purpose of their visit was to evaluate how well the mission’s objectives were being met as far as preparations for the elections in 2023.

“We’ll really like to urge the political parties to stop talking at each other and being abusive, but start talking to each other. You’re not having a battle,” he said.

The delegation’s leader also condemned the act of buying and selling votes in the nation.

In response, Sani stated that one of the main obstacles to the nation’s progress was the lack of devoted and patriotic leadership.

“So, your visit is timely because some of the things that are happening are not good for our peace of mind, especially the issues of violence and use of money in the electoral process. If this kind of visits are not taking place, perhaps such things will keep happening with greater impunity,” Sani said.
