LAGOS: Three crushed to death, many injured in Ketu road accident

THREE people were crushed to death while many others were injured, when a red bus ran into a yellow bus (Danfo) in an early morning accident, today, in Ketu, Lagos.

The incident which occured at about 6.53am, inward Mile 12, saw road users who were heading for Mile 12/Ikorodu  held up in traffic gridlock as a result of the accident.

It was gathered that the bodies of the deceased victims have been deposited in the morgue while those injured were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The red buses are operated by Asset Management Company under a public private partnership to compliment the services of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), in Lagos.

According an eye witness, who identified herself as Bolarinwa Adelakun, the incident occured when the Red bus suffered a brake failure and crashed into the Yellow bus and in the process, crushed three people to death immediately and injured many others.

She stated that the crushed victims were among many who often ignore the pedestrian order and stand by the road side to board vehicles or dash across the expressway and not use the pedestrian bridge despite its  closeness to the bus- stop.

Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq said the incident was unfortunate. He, however, urged people to make use of designated bus-stops and pedestrian bridges to avoid future occurrences.

He said, “The incident is unfortunate. Designated bus-,stops and pedestrian bridges are constructed for our use. Let me seize this opportunity to advice people to make good use of it and stop endangering our lives.”

“Normalcy have returned on the road, as we our proactive of officers in the area immediately called for our trucks to evacuate the accidented vehicles to allow free flow of traffic with help of the Nigerian Police Alapere Division,” Adebayo added.

He further stated that the State Environmental and Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) have deposited the bodies at the morgue.
